Music and debate

Please join in the Valley of the Shadow Annual Fundraiser. We are raising $7,700. Please hit the Tip Jar here to contribute. Thank you.

First, if you're here today -- it's either too hot or your too busy. Enjoy this video to cool down. I've seen Blue Man Group perform in New York City and Las Vegas (at the Luxor Hotel). Eventually, I'd like to see Moby. Jill Scott, I just couldn't get into, but that's not her fault.

Second, the contest for the $25.00 Amazon.com Gift Certificate goes forward. More promotion after Monday.

Third, debate this issue: An old trick I used when I was a Democratic partisan in NYC was, compare every opposite politician to the last besmirched politician of that Party (During protests of Gulf War I [for not supporting Middle Eastern democracies, my how times change,] President George HW Bush was compared to Nixon -- thirty years of Nixon gives the GOP full rights and responsibilities to call and compare every Democrat to Clinton), argue three positives of the last two Presidencies. What makes and made President Bush and President William Clinton good for America? I'll join in after.

Now, enjoy the video:

  1. JSF, I had the chance to see Moby do a DJ set in a very small club in New Paltz, NY, probably around 94 or 95. He was already pretty big at the time, but obviously not as big as he got a few years later. He spun a pretty tripped out set of midtempo acid house. I was peaking on mescaline during his set, so I don't remember too many details, but I do remember dancing pretty hard.

The problem with Jill Scott for me is that straddling the line between jazz and hiphop she doesn't quite hit enough of either.

My latest musical obsession has been Porcupine Tree. They're newschool British prog rock and they're damn good.

Are you asking us this question? If so, it's too hard, JSF, especially the Clinton one. I will bite my tongue here as plenty comes to mind which doesn't exactly fit the question.

  3. Aurora,

Yes, it is actally me asking the question. The best way to deal with anti-Americanism is to defeat it when it comes close. I did not like President Clinton, but when someone speaks ill of my country from overseas (or considers him/herself a domestic expatriate) I defend the indefesible.

If I can make the leap across party lines to defend America, then to be a better partisan, I ask, defend the other guy. (No, you don't have to like him, just prove that American Presidents are more important than party.)

You'll be pleased to know that a group of pro-Bush Aussies met him with a huge banner that said something cheesy like 'Australia loves George Bush'...LOL

It's interesting you should say that. I have some Americans coming to my blog who bash GWB but I won't do it even if I think perhaps he's making some wrong moves on immigration. But there is one fierce patriot who comes on there who thinks exactly as you outline above who doesn't even want to hear a hint of a criticism about any of his policies like the immigration/open borders thing. He's even made almost the identical comment about the Presidential position being more important than the party. You and he are the only two I've heard say that. He's a Conservative to the core but he says he would support any president in power simply by virtue of the office. I really respect this in him though I see things just a tiny bit differently.

  5. You do realize by the way that I'm one of the fiercest patriots that you could meet and that I consider myself an American (mostly) with an Aussie accent. I get quite livid when I hear anyone bag America and I make sure that everyone I work with knows that I have very strong ties to America (which generally keeps the more idiotic of them with their traps shut on the subject) I work in a very leftist profession and there was one guy (now left) who was half Brit who really had it in for the U.S. but had to mostly shut his mouth because I was around! LOL
Just so you know all that. I'll slug them as soon as look at them...LOL...and actually there was one Czech guy who I hadn't told I was half American and he started going on and on about how inferior American universities were bla, bla, bla...and I was being the teacher and not saying a word. (We're not supposed to intervene with our opinions on these topics) but I got so infuriated that I turned around with a voice of white rage and let him know in a dangerously calm tone but with my eyes glittering with rage that I was half-American and that I love my country. He practically choked....LOL....avoided me like the plague after that.

  6. My Aurora, you sure are a fiesty one. It sure is a shame you're not putting that to good use fighting this war that you think is such a good idea.
