Laugh into 2013 -- Moon over Parador and George Carlin

Even I have to take a break from politics, so here is a funny movie to keep you laughing if you are home on New years Eve.

Enjoy Moon Over Parador!

And here is a comedy routine by the late George Carlin:

Happy 2013!

For Speaker Boehner and the House GOP: Choose Strategy over Tactics

We are hours away from the "Fiscal Cliff,"

Hear the sound of the clock...

"Match of the Century"
Speaker Boehner and the House GOP, it is time to re-read Sun Tzu:

"When your weapons are dulled and ardour damped, your strength exhausted and treasure spent, neighboring rulers will take advantage of your distress to act. And even though you have good counsellors, none will be able to lay good plans for the future,"
-- The Art of War, pg. 73

"If a general is unable to control his impatience and orders his troops to swarm up the hill like ants, one third of them will be killed without taking the city, Such is the calamity of these attacks."
-- The Art of War, pp. 78-9

"If the enemy is strong and I am weak, I temporarily withdraw and do not engage,"
-- The Art of War, pg. 89

In modern life (and politics), everyone is going for the win, what Sun Tzu is saying, without the support of the people (post media blitz 2012), and flagging energy (Thanks to the Establishment GOP who brought Romney upon the locals), sometimes it is OK to retreat.

The tactic is simple (since the modern Democrats do not read Churchill's, "....in Victory: Magnanimity,"):

At the end of the 112th Congress, retreat, but regroup and fight across the 113th.

The Strategy of "The Long Game," beats a Tactical win in the short one

Or to quote many of us on the ground:

 My question: Will the Speaker listen to Sun Tzu?

UPDATE 11:55 PST: Welcome Instapundit readers! And have a very Happy New Year!

The Fiscal Cliff: Teaching President Obama to Negotiate

This whole "Fiscal Cliff," thing could have been avoided and we could all be settling down to enjoying the New Year,

But Noooooooooo! Majority Leader Reid spent years NOT negotiating with the House of Representatives over Appropriation bills.  Had those bills been passed (even as Omnibus bills), we would not be at the Fiscal Cliff.

Even the foreign markets are  scared at the Democrat's stupidity in not passing Appropriation bills.

Democrats, you have a President who doesn't know how to get ahead of a problem -- that's not what Presidents do.

The last Budget that was passed, occured on April 29, 2009.

Conference Committee and negotiation, that's how Congress works.  You cannot blame Bush and Republicans forever if you want them at the table.  Maria Bartiromo at CNBC put it best:

Now, a gift from a California Republican to the intransigent Democratic Majority in the Executive Branch and the Senate.....

A lesson on How to negotiate!

1) The GOP and Tea Party want to get Government spending under control -- not wipe it off the map.  By allowing both groups and Speaker Boehner to "Save Face," a deal can be reached;

2) Senator Reid needs to own up by not going to Conference Committee, lo these many years, he owns "The Fiscal Cliff,"  and

3) If the GOP is attacked, the Partisans defend -- if done during the inauguration, what riots will break out? All President Obama and Senator Reid must do is give countering numbers. Speaker Boehner did it with Plan B.  Your pieces cannot remain immobile on the Chess board.

In the end, the ball will be kicked into the 113th Congress and if a budget is passed, I will be surprised.

My question: Why did the Democrats never pass an Appropriation Bill?

Musings on (Birthday) 42!

If we must broach on 42, let us start with Douglas Adams' famous work, made into a BBC TV show (which was better then the Hollywood movie, sorry Hollywood: Story + Character = Show/movie I want to watch again and again):

One theme that has threaded through my life is a sense (since I grew up in Queens in the 70's which inspired Carpenter's Escape from New York and Marvel X Men's Days of Future Past) of Dystopia is always a step away which leads to a the TV Trope: End of an Age.  And this year, add the TV Trope that "The Magic Goes Away,"

DC's Trenchcoat Brigade

When Club Monte Cristo was taken from the Goths, so was a place many of us called "Our second Home,"  When the Lord of the Rings ended (as well as Narnia), magic was leaving from its Mundane  Then there was the Election. The Ideologues beat the Pragmatics -- a first in the modern era of my industry (Modern Era in American politics begins 1992).  Both those tropes apply. The magic was truly gone from the Mundane.

Club Monte Cristo represented a safe haven whilst I saw the Election spiral from Pragmatics to propaganda (and the silence of the Romney campaign to 'Local Yokels' is an unpublished story); when that was gone, there was no safe haven for me to dance in the dark.

Where Aslan took Narnia's Magic

Now, I am a fully sworn in member of RPLAC (50th AD) -- I continue to be Pragmatic when others listen to Rhetoric and take it as real.  I planned the future a few days before my Birthday -- 42.  Life, the Universe, and Everything.  To succeed, I must fight within my Party (Ideological and National) and Outside (Democrats and the MSM) -- but that's another post.

What things am I thankful for?

1. My readers -- without you, I'd just be a guy shouting on a (palm tree lined, sunny) street corner;

2. My family -- When we were out to dinner to celebrate my Birthday, my Mom, my Sister and I all laughed at something.  A strong family means whatever Devil my disease can raise, is in check.

3. My friends -- I have friends in three circles -- Goths, Politicos, and Bloggers.  Without all of you, I would be the guy still standing on the (Palm tree, sunny) Street Corner.

4. Muses, past, current and future: Without having a Muse, a writer cannot write.  If I dance with you on the dance floor, or chat with you on Facebook (or text you) or over an Italian dinner, you have already charmed me.  Art requires beauty and I see it in the Dark.

5. Good Italian food.  There is nothing to say, but it makes me happy.  Being happy and content are some of my goals.  Settling down with a beautiful Muse and creating the Palm Tree Empire is my next one.

OK, back to politics before Congress comes back!

My question:  Is the Magic ending in your life? Or is it Returning?

Christmas 2012

As the year 2012 seeps slowly out of existence (unless someone can travel to Time as they travel to places, you know, in a wibbly-wobbly Timey-wimey sort of way), my posts and writing is becoming fewer as I take in the life around me.

I still will write, but there are many things going on.   In 2013, I shall write even more then 2012.

Santa Claus, Early 1800's

As this is Christmas, here is a video for you to enjoy.

Have a Merry Christmas with your friends and family! May your 2013 be filled with good surprises and wonderful people!

See you on the B-side!

Weekend Movie Post -- Identity

It's been a long week.

I learned a great deal from friends and family.  Later today, I shall return to Blog.

A Rebel Alliance Propaganda Poster (just because)

What subjects?

A) Musings from Birthday 42;

B) Tactics and Strategies for the House GOP;

C) How the new RPLAC Board can do good;

D) Lessons about Guns and Students from when I was in SUNY-Stonybrook;

E) The 2012 Marcia Tookey (good) and Mike Murphy Awards (bad) for Los Angeles and California Republicans; and

F) Best Posts of 2012.

Now, enjoy a good thriller called Identity (2003)

If you want to comment, here's a question:

Does loyalty in friendship matter even if the Politics differ?

I say "Yes,"

Now, enjoy the film!

In the Cross Hair of Stereotypes: Mental Illness, Being Goth and Republican

Another random shooting, another round of stereotyping begins (again).

Adam Lanza, the bastard who committed the murders up in Newton, is already being classified by his mental illness and the fact he was a Goth.

As someone who DOES have Mental illness and is a Goth (and has been stereotyped by Goths as the worst of the GOP -- no one is immune from stereotyping), let me explain what helps or hurts the situ right now. (My Birthday post is next).

First, let's tackle Mental Illness.

The DSM-IV has multiple mental disorders that anyone can suffer from.  Very few people with a Mental Illness are going to follow in Lanza's footsteps, or  Loughner, or Holmes.  But sometimes when I introduce that I have bi-polar depression, I sometimes see the shadow behind the eyes asking: Will he hurt me?

If you want to know about THIS person who deals with Bi-polar depression and Aspergers: I am more suicidal then homicidal.

The way I deal with my illness is simple:

1) I take my pills;
2) I go to my Talk Therapy;
3) I go to my Psychiatrist to judge how (1) is doing; and
4) I make or go out for some Pasta -- it keeps me happy.

If you know someone with Mental Illness, they need to do all these things.  I wanted to keep my head on straight because I understand politics and policy; If I went off my pills or stopped talk therapy, I could not be of use within those realms.  And some people with my disease look for the "Conspiracy Politics,"

That's not me.

If you meet someone who deals with Mental Illness, don't stereotype unless they act out -- then you must realize that the person needs their meds.  The Meds bring the one with illness close to normalcy.

When it comes to the question of institutionalisation, Mental health has many degrees of socialization.  I'm lucky to be at the high end, I can talk and negotiate with people who work on Capitol Hill and Sacramento.  I can dance and talk with beautiful Muses.

Others, such as the many homeless who are about, cannot do these things.  There is a hole in the Social Security system to that hurts those with mental illness, but that is a discussion for another day.  Those who cannot handle the normal social setting do need time in an institution, under doctor's care.

Those are the ones who might find the way to the guns.

Now, we tackle stereotyping Goths.

Catherine Urso, of Newtown, said her college-age son knew the killer and remembered him for his alternative style. "He just said he was very thin, very remote and was one of the goths," she said.

No, as I described back here all Goths want is to be left alone to enjoy their art, their music, and their Dancing. Goths may look like human porcupines, but we have many different styles, just like Republicans.  Look at this:

And finally, to help you understand, watch this video:

Now the third and final part to this post:

How Goths stereotype Republicans.

 As the picture above showed many different Goths, Republicans are different from State to State, County to County.

Also, as someone who has been involved in politics since I was 15, i am annoyed that people who venture into my world, stereotype us all, then judge me for the words of those who don't even live among us here in the Southland.

If you look to the sidebar --> the simple ideal of the GOP is "Commerce, Democracy and Rock & Roll,"  There is a future post about the many myths of the two parties, one of the myths is that Abortion will go away.

Here is some reality:

If a Republican Congress with a Republican President and a Republican  Supreme  Court  did not overturn it, why does anyone think it will be overturned?

The precedent is set, the American people have lived with Abortion since 1973.  The rest is just Emmanuel Goldstein hype by the Democrats.  Smart people should know when they are being fooled by supposed allies. (And we on the Right support the concept of Precedent in Law and in Congress,)

I'm a Social Libertarian. The Government should have nothing to with our wallets or our bedrooms.  But if you think every Republican is a Social Conservative, then why should I fight for your cause?

Americans come in all manner of shades, sizes and ideals.

One of the first lessons I learned in NYC was not to stereotype anyone.

All I can hope for is that we are treated as individuals, not as a group.  Whether it is for my mental illness, or my Gothiness or being a GOP Activist, all I ask is to be treated like an individual.

Or to quote MLK, Jr.:

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

My question: Have you ever been stereotyped? Do you stereotype anyone?

The Battle of Michigan and Legacy of Clodius vs.Milo

Did you feel that?

The American Republic is shaking again.  Those who proceeded to protest in Wisconsin are taking the same tacks in Michigan (9% Unemployment).  Those tacks echo the ending of the Roman Republic.

The Battle of Michigan starts with a tale of the Mob Rule as the Roman Republic was unraveling.

Here is a (fictionalized) story of Titus Annius Milo and the death of Clodius Pulcher.  In other words, where the Mobs of Michigan will end:

On memeorandum, the Left were upset and the Right was shocked at the attacks against the Democratic process.

First watch this video:

The video above shows what Milo and Clodius was trying to achieve.

Travel backwards if you want to understand the Now:

"...By testing the opportunities of street violence to the very limits, Clodius blazed a trail that others were preparing to follow. In December 58 [BCE] Clodius' term of office came to an end. Among the new tribunes was a gruff and brutal Pompeian. Titus Annius Milo. Encouraged by his patron, Milo formally indicted Clodius for employing violence, an open and shut case if there ever was one Clodius, by appealing to his brother Appius, who was Praetor that year, managed to have the charge suppressed, and ordered his gangs to ransack Milo's house in revenge.

"But the new Tribune, backed by the infinite sources of Pompey, and aware he was dead meat unless he met violence with violence...He [Milo] began to recruit gangs of his own, not, as Clodius had done by bribing amateurs from the slums, but by importing well-armed well-trained heavies from Pompey's estates and buying up gladiators to steel their ranks.

"At a stroke, Clodius' monopoly on street violence ended, a challenge to which the former Tribune rose with...gusto. The gang warfare escalated daily. Soon, it became so brutal that all Government Institutions in the Forum, including the Law Courts, had to be suspended. Day after day, across the public places of Rome, the tides of anarchy ebbed and flowed."
-- Tom Holland, Rubicon, pp. 244-45

Welcome to the slow birth of the First Triumvirate.

What is causing all this madness?

Michigan, in trying to fight to get manufacturing going again (When is the 2013 Pontiac Firebird coming off the line? Oh, there is no Pontiac Trans Am anymore! Game, set, match, not in the Unions favor.) wanted to make their state "Right to Work,"

What is "Right to Work?"

Right-to-work laws are state laws that prohibit both the closed and union shop. A right to work law secures the right of employees to decide for themselves whether or not to join or financially support a union. However,employees who work in the railway or airline industries are not protected by a right to work law, and employees who work on a federal enclave may not be.
...
If you resign from membership, you may not be able to participate in union elections or meetings, vote in collective bargaining ratification elections, or participate in other "internal" union activities. If you resign, you cannot be disciplined by the union for any post-resignation conduct.

If you resign from union membership, you are still fully covered by the collective bargaining agreement that was negotiated between your employer and the union, and the union remains obligated to represent you. Any benefits that are provided to you by your employer pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement (e.g., wages, seniority, vacations, pension, health insurance)will not be affected by your resignation. However, the union may exclude you from some "members-only" benefits. Although you may resign from union membership at anytime, you may be limited to a specific "window period"before you are able to end any automatic dues deductions.

(h/t US Legal Dictionary)

Was Right to Work passed in the dead of night?
Was it done by Executive or Judicial Fiat?

No, it was done in the light of day, passed by the two branches of the State House and signed by the Governor.  Last I checked, Elected Officials, not Union leaders, represent "the people,"

Rather then going about and Lobbying the Legislature, the Unions bussed in protesters and caused havoc and violence.

Who is doing the people's work again?

My question: When Democrats lose votes in the State Houses, they have been resorting to violence.  Is President Obama allowing the rise of a new Milo and Clodius in America?

Health issues (Recap) Four years Post Plague Year

A Great Movie about Bi-Polar Depression. See it.

[This is a very personal post by Yours Truly. If you want to stick to Politics and Policy, please wait until tomorrow when more Political Posts will arrive. This is sort of a shout out to my Goth and Blogger crowd.  My Politico crowds (CA and DC) don't worry because I am a Pragmatist with Idealist goals.  No one questions my professionalism in my Industry.  The Blogger crowd saw the Plague Year, this post is an Addendum to that tale. So, read on if you care or move on if you must.]

It happens around this time of year.

The Birthday.  This year its 42.

As I was growing up, around this time it was always hard to gather people for my Birthday (Christmas is a'comin'!) which led to a second major issue which ties in with my Bipolar depression:

Growing up, I was ignored. A lot.

New York City was falling apart around my ears, my parents were struggling and no one heard me.  I hid myself in comics, sci-fi (especially Star Wars and Star Trek) and history.  When you are ignored, hiding come easily.

This song fits:

Since I spent time being ignored, I learned a trick that lasted me until I was 38 -- hiding my emotions and hiding from myself.  As a kid, I spent it imagining many things -- it inspired me to become a writer; once I hit Junior High, I started to see how crazy the world was.

Once I found Politics in High School, mixed in with seeing how the NYC fell apart, I understood one thing: Politics/Policy will always be here.  There is always someone who wants to be King. And because I enjoyed the novella Heart of Darkness and the biography of Joseph Conrad, I understood I cannot be a writer alone, but Politics will be my Oceans as I gather characters and stories for a future fiction book.

Then I got to college and did my internship on Capitol Hill.  Being King is one thing, but staffers will always know more Policy then the King.  And one lesson I learned in DC is how important Loyalty is.

There is one Rule I have in stone when it comes to meeting Beautiful Muses: If they are with someone, if they are engaged or married -- I stop.  I believe in Karma due my studies in American Political History.  Don't believe karma exists in Politics?

Follow me!

1960 IL balanced out by 2000 FL;
1980 Reagan over Carter balanced out by 1992 Clinton over Bush Sr;
1973 Impeachment balanced out by 1998; and
D 40 years holding the House of Reps v the Rise of GOP in the House of Reps;

Karma exists.  I am a history and Congressional geek -- I see it.

When you hide, you find books are the best places to be.  I hid in History, Political Biographies (especially of Nixon and Churchill) and sci-fi.

It worked so well, i didn't even care by 36-37 if I felt any emotions or not.

When I was on Capitol Hill, I felt on top of the world. I grasped the pragmatics of getting a Bill through, of understanding Policy and of building coalitions for your view.  I learned the important "Drink without drinking," What made me happy there was I was listened to and understood.

 Then came the Plague year which was 3 years of being ignored and treated like crap at work.  No matter what I knew or how I saw things within the business (I study organizations very fast), my voice was worthless.

Hence, the breakdown in 08.

Another song:

In dealing with RPLAC and the CRP, my voice is heard, but strangely when it come to something (as an Asperger sufferer) that I studied, lived and researched, my views on Politics in the Goth world meant shit.  My Right in the dark came apart before I could even bring the third candidate.

I was ignored again.

Another rule I live by is "To Tell the Truth as I See it,"  That goes with Blogging, and it goes to Politics and friends.  I don't propagandize unless there is a TV Camera shining in my face or if I have to write an article for a PARTISAN magazine.  I don't propagandize my friends and family.

As someone who learned the Old School, I listen to the problems, if i don't have an answer or if I must research, I say so.  Some people don't understand that politics is a business.  Putting together Right in the Dark was part of that.  When I asked to be listened to, I was ignored.

And like the song, I was screaming inside.

 My only wish is to still dance and find a beautiful Muse among the Goths who understands the Pragmatic side of my work.  I am a Social Libertarian, I understand that some Goths have NSFW Day jobs.  If they like it, G-d Bless 'em.  The SoCons look down upon the Goths, I am inside the tent and I fight them from inside.

They don't care if you have a D next to your name.

To win CA and LA, the SoCons have to learn to listen to me.

I just wish my Goth friends would too (about this subject that I understand).

A final song:

OK, political posts coming up.

My question: What is your take?

Democrat's Pyrrhic Victory: No Mandate of Heaven

On November 6th, President Obama won and expanded their Senate (and California State) majorities.

Second terms are not the friendliest to Presidents, the potential for scandal and inner party opposition expands, the days after the inauguration, a President's Political Capitol receeds into the sands of History.

What is the "Mandate of Heaven" that Democrats think they have?

Superstorm Sandy, Benghazi, Spy Drone taken by Iran...

This:
  1. The right to rule China is granted by Heaven.
  2. There can be only one legitimate ruler of China.
  3. The right to rule is based on the virtue of the ruler and his good performance as a steward for Heaven.
  4. The right to rule may be passed down from father to son, but only on the conditions established above. Once the Mandate is lost, the will of Heaven towards a successor will only be known by the working out of the imponderable force of events in human history.
These four leading ideas have important implications:
  1. Legitimization of the ruling house in the eyes of the people who come under its sway.
  2. Times of divided rule require some rationalization after the fact to establish which ruler can claim truly to have the Mandate.
  3. The rulers put checks on their own behavior, and are encouraged to invest in the well-being of their subjects.
  4. The rulers necessarily fear rebellion, possibly because they believe in active intervention from Heaven, and/or possibly because they know that misbehavior will give positive sanction to attempts by others to overthrow them..
(H/t Wikipedia)

Since democrats believe in the above, what other stories are there for Second terms?

I wonder if President Obama has ever heard the story of King Pyrrhus of Epirus?

Or heard the term "Pyrrhic Victory?"

And from Plutarch:

Consequently, Pyrrhus found himself obliged to fight another battle, and after recuperating his army he marched to the city of Asculum, where he engaged the Romans. Here, however, he was forced into regions where his cavalry could not operate, and upon a river with swift current and wooded banks, so that his elephants could not charge and engage the enemy's phalanx.

Therefore, after many had been wounded and slain, for the time being the struggle was ended by the coming of night.  But on the next day, designing to fight the battle on level ground, and to bring his elephants to bear upon the ranks of the enemy, Pyrrhus occupied betimes the unfavourable parts of the field with a detachment of his troops; then he put great numbers of slingers and led his forces to the attack in dense array and with a mighty impetus.

So the Romans, having no opportunity for sidelong shifts and counter-movements, as on the previous day, were obliged to engage on level ground and front to front; and being anxious to repulse the enemy's men-at‑arms before their elephants came up, they fought fiercely with their swords against the Macedonian spears, reckless of their lives and thinking only of wounding and slaying, while caring naught for what they suffered.

After a long time, however, as we are told, they began to be driven back at the point where Pyrrhus himself was pressing hard upon his opponents; but the greatest havoc was wrought by the furious strength of the elephants, since the valour of the Romans was of no avail in fighting them, but they felt that they must yield before them as before an onrushing billow or a crashing earthquake, and not stand their ground only to die in vain, or suffer all that is most grievous without doing any good at all.

After a short flight the Romans reached their camp, with a loss of six thousand men, according to Hieronymus, who also says that on the side of Pyrrhus, according to the king's own commentaries, thirty-five hundred and five were killed.  Dionysius, however, makes no mention of two battles at Asculum, nor of an admitted defeat of the Romans, but says that the two armies fought once for all until sunset and then at last separated; Pyrrhus, he says, was wounded in the arm by a javelin, and also had his baggage plundered by the Daunians;

And there fell, on the side of Pyrrhus and on that of the Romans, over fifteen thousand men.

The two armies separated; and we are told that Pyrrhus said to one who was congratulating him on his victory, "If we are victorious in one more battle with the Romans, we shall be utterly ruined."  For he had lost a great part of the forces with which he came, and all his friends and generals except a few; moreover, he had no others whom he could summon from home, and he saw that his allies in Italy were becoming indifferent, while the army of the Romans, as if from a fountain gushing forth indoors, was easily and speedily filled up again, and they did not lose courage in defeat, nay, their wrath gave them all the more vigour and determination for the war.

Let's roll the clocks back to November 6, 2012 -- at a moment where most Republicans from different states put up with a lot of crap from their own side (and the continual Tarkin Doctrine and Emmanuel Goldsteining of our Moderates), did President Obama give a bomfog speech? Or campaign with a plan for his Second Term?

NO.

"As for the election just passed, a sophisticated campaign operation and dedicated supporters helped to re-elect President Obama. One thing that didn’t get Obama re-elected was a clear, second-term agenda. He is unique among American presidents for having been elected twice without a defined agenda.

 ...
"Obama’s lack of agenda, let alone a mandate, represents an opportunity for Republicans. Beyond attempting to raise taxes and signing executive orders, what is Obama going to do over the next 4 years? Recall that he barely did anything at all in 2012. The answer, is that 2012-2016 will be a lot like 2012.

"Also keep in mind that second-term, off-year elections are generally unkind to a President’s Party. This time, they could be especially so because we are arguably headed for difficult economic times given Obamacare’s looming implementation, proposed tax increases, and ever more in the way of regulations."

No plan and politicking during the "Fiscal Cliff," negotiations -- that is not the way to make or keep friends from the opposition to help.

"A sickly economy and lack of an agenda gives Republicans an opportunity to make 2014 a big year. In contrast to a rudderless Obama, if Republicans become real government reformers, 2014 could in fact be exceptional. Here is the plan to do just that:

"Congressional Republicans should pick out significant government programs that are not working. Obviously, that will be incredibly easy. Then they should lay out specific cost savings from those failed programs.

 "For the next two years, the Republicans should hold a monthly press conference[s]... wherein they explain:
  1. The original purpose of the Non-working Program,
  2. Who was originally supposed to have benefited from the Non-working Program,
  3. The GOP’s Reformed Program,
  4. Why the Reformed Program is better for the Nation,
  5. How much the Reformed Program will save taxpayers, and
  6. How many teachers per year could be saved if Democrats would join Republicans in saving taxpayers this money.
"Republicans should then dare the President and Senate Democrats to reject these savings. Republicans should keep the pressure on the Democrats through the alternative Media including websites and social networking where younger voters live. Young voters need to see the price of Washington waste that deprives them of teachers, jobs, Social Security andMedicare"

Can anyone argue with Fiscal Conservatism (which is basis of the Tea Party crowd)?

Once upon a time, Democrats, Liberals and progressives were Reformers instead of Jacobins.  That will be another post.

The Game (or Mandate of Heaven) of 2013-14 is simple:

The Party that goes against Corruption and Helps the Taxpayers, wins.

My question: Can anybody explain what is the Obama Administration's Second term Agenda? Or the Obama Doctrine?
